TG Group Champions Sustainability with Award-Winning Quarry Restoration

At TG Group, we take pride in running our business with a strong focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility – values that are deeply rooted across all parts of our operation, including TG Builders Merchants.

One of the best examples of this is our ongoing work to restore and enhance the natural environment at our quarry sites, including Wood Lane in Ellesmere and Cefn Graianog near Caernarfon.

Wood Lane Nature Reserve – From Quarry to Wildlife Haven

At Wood Lane, we’ve partnered with the Shropshire Wildlife Trust to create a thriving public nature reserve on part of the restored quarry. The award-winning Wood Lane Nature Reserve is now a valuable green space that supports a wide variety of wildlife and plant life.

The site features:

  • Natural wetlands and lagoons

  • Peaceful woodland and wildflower meadows

  • Open grasslands ideal for biodiversity

It’s a haven for bird watchers, anglers, school groups, and visitors from across the region – and it’s become an important place for learning, leisure, and conservation.

Supporting Education and the Local Community

Every year, hundreds of local schoolchildren visit the reserve, supported by Shropshire Wildlife Trust teaching staff. These visits are packed with hands-on learning, covering topics like:

  • Sustainability and conservation

  • Wildlife and habitat protection

  • Geography, geology, and the history of quarrying

Purpose-built bird hides and a dedicated teaching trailer help turn the site into an inspiring outdoor classroom.

“We’re proud to show how responsible quarrying and nature conservation can work side by side,” said a spokesperson for TG Group. “It’s all part of our long-term commitment to protecting the environment while supporting the communities we serve.”

A Model for Sustainable Practice

Wood Lane is just one example of how TG Group goes beyond the basics of restoration. From sustainable sourcing of materials to creating public spaces that give back to nature and local people, we’re dedicated to doing things the right way – for today and for the future.
